Primary source: General Dental Council — CPD for dental professionals. Requirements on this page are summarised from the regulator's published standards — always confirm the current rules at the source.

The GDC’s Enhanced CPD scheme is the most structured in the English-speaking world: 100 verifiable hours per five-year cycle for dentists, 75 for hygienists, therapists, orthodontic therapists and clinical dental technicians, 50 for dental nurses and technicians — with an annual statement, a personal development plan, and a rule that you can’t declare zero hours two years running. Every hour must be verifiable, which in practice means documentary evidence showing the activity had concrete aims, anticipated outcomes mapped to the GDC’s development outcomes (A–D), and a certificate from the provider.

Here’s the part UK colleagues are often surprised by: most good free international webinars meet the verifiable standard. The certificate needs to show your name, the provider, the date, the hours and the learning content — which the major free platforms (CDEWorld, Dentalcare, the manufacturer academies) routinely provide. When you log the activity, map it to an outcome yourself: a composite technique webinar is outcome C; a communication or consent lecture is A. The GDC’s “highly recommended” topics — medical emergencies, radiography, decontamination — are harder to source freely and usually need UK-specific providers, so budget those separately and use free clinical content for the bulk of your outcome-C hours.

The full scheme, including the recommended-topic hour counts, is summarised in the UK section of the CPD requirements guide.
